It’s summer, and with summer comes the summer driving season. Whether it’s trips to the beach or driving back and forth to the cabin by the lake, we do a lot of driving in the summer. Now more than ever, drivers want to ensure that their cars stay in peak condition and avoid unnecessary repairs. One of the most important parts of your car to keep in good condition is your brakes. If you want to avoid brake repair this summer, Durabild has some tips.
Follow these tips to avoid brake repair during the summer driving season.
Avoid heavy traffic.
Easier said than done, we know. But if you can avoid traveling in heavy traffic, you can extend the life of your brakes. Sitting in traffic taking your foot on and off the brake means that your brakes are constantly engaging and disengaging. If you can take the back way or travel when there are fewer people on the road, the will eliminate a lot of wear and tear to your brakes.
Don’t follow too closely.
Braking suddenly causes your brakes to wear out faster than braking gently. If you are in traffic or just driving around town, you should follow the “three-second rule.” Keeping three seconds’ worth of space between you and the car in front of you is not only safer, as well as good for your brakes. It also means that you don’t have to slam your brakes to keep from rear-ending someone.
Drive slow in traffic.
This ties in to the previous tip. In stop-and-go traffic, you never get to travel at speed until you are free of the jam. If you accelerate and brake hard every few minutes, you’ll wear out your brakes. It’s also terrible for your gas mileage.
Don’t overload the car.
Speed isn’t the only factor in how quickly your car can come to a stop. When we travel for the summer, we usually load up the car with everything we could possibly need. And if you bring a trailer, that’s extra weight, too. To limit wear to your breaks, take any heavy cargo out of your car when you don’t need to bring it with you. Also, detach your trailer when you’re not using it.
